A wide variety of learning

A paper engineer in the library

On 14th November Steve Augrave, a paper engineer from Tintinhull spent a day with us. This event was funded by the Friends of the School. Six groups of students learnt the basics of paper engineering, and created pictures, multi layered 3D images and sculptural constructions (‘pop-ups’). Paper engineering introduces a number of skills which link into the Mathematics, Drawing and Design Technology curriculum. It was a very different and very interesting experience.

The three r's (a different interpretation)!

Reduce          Reuse          Recycle

A sustainability project was started last year by 9AW, working with an organisation called GLADE, with the aim of starting to recycle waste from the school. We also looked at alternatives to carrier bags with Safeway supermarket.

This year a team of volunteers was formed after two assemblies to manage and publicise the facilities. We now have a large amount of cans and bottles from the canteen as well as paper from classrooms. All of this waste is sold to a company that then recycles it and the money we make goes directly to the Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance. We also hope to start composting vegetable peelings from the food department to be used in the school grounds. After Christmas there will be a Christmas card collection so please send any cards you have to school and they will be recycled with profits to the Air Ambulance.

Artist in residence

Most of you will have seen examples of the work that our students have produced this term working with Celia Smith, our artist in residence. There are times when Celia needs to have a second person working with her in the studio. If you have some time to spare and would like to work with Celia on a voluntary basis we would be pleased to hear from you.

The School Council were asked to look at the work produced by students working with Celia: they were asked to select the model which they felt would be best suited as a life size sculpture in the school grounds. They decided on Rose Boyce’s ‘Gymnast’. In due course this will be sculpted at full size and displayed in the grounds.

Extension afternoon

On 25th November we held an Extension afternoon for students identified as gifted in English. 25 pupils from partner primaries joined 8 KA students from Y7 & 8. Mr Hughes began the afternoon in his inimitable exciting way by talking about genre and story telling with lots of group work and sharing of ideas. Students then wrote their own favourite fairy tale in a different genre. Everyone was invited to finish their story at home and return it to us with a promise of a book mark for the best ones! We are hoping to put all the stories in a book, so watch this space!
