Westcliff School's International Connections

At Westcliff School we are lucky to be part of an international school community. We have been involved in one Comenius project with schools in Germany and Hungary. For this each school shared traditional songs, rhymes and games throughout the year. We also had teachers from our partner schools come over to visit us, and see what school life is like in England, as well as teachers from our school visiting Germany and Hungary. The project was very successful. Although this has since come to an end we have maintained strong links with our partner schools. In fact the teachers from Germany came to visit again last year in their own time and taught sample German lessons to our pupils.

This year we have a German language assistant working in our school. Christina supports the children in all areas of the curriculum as well as offering children across the Key Stages the opportunity to learn German. She is also involved in out of school clubs and can often be seen helping at school parties and school fayres.

For The Future

Another Comenius Project

At the moment we are putting together an application to be part of another Comenius project. If successful we will be starting a story based project with schools in Germany, Spain, Hungary, Romania and Poland in September 2003.

Links with New Zealand

This year Westcliff School has started a reading recovery scheme. Reading recovery was first established in New Zealand. Therefore we are now looking to start another link with a school in New Zealand to look at how Reading Recovery is used there.

The Library

Welcome to the school library! In the library you can find many different kinds of books. You can find information books (non-fiction) and picture books (fiction). Miss Clark is the Librarian. She is very helpful and works very hard to keep it well stocked. Every year Miss Clark chooses Year 6 children as librarians to help her. Every week each class has a timetabled time to go and look at books in the library and change their library books. Most children enjoy having the opportunity to look at a variety of books that they are interested in. Children also come to the library to find books related to their Science, History, Geography or RE topic.

The School Council

The school council has been up and running since January 2002. In September children are given the opportunity to stand as school councillors. They must put together some reasons for why people should vote for them. After they have shared their views with their class, the rest of the class votes for the 2 people they think will do the best job. Each year we choose a Chairperson and a secretary. We meet once a month in the Rainbow Room. As well as the children Miss Francis and Mr Last (A governor) come to our meetings. We have looked at different issues that have come from suggestion boxes in children’s classrooms.

Art at Westcliff

Art and design stimulates pupil creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a way of understanding and responding to the world. As such, work in this area is given high priority at Westcliff School.

Constant opportunities are provided for the children to use colour, pattern, texture, line, tone, shape, form, space and different materials and processes to communicate what they see. Our children explore, through discussion and the making of art, the ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. Frequent opportunities are provided for our children to work alongside artists in school.

December 2002 - Artist in Residence Project: Mosaic Making

Our most recent project involved all of our children, from reception to year six, working alongside two professional mosaic makers. They created a fantastic piece of art work that now hangs by our school entrance.
