Dear Parents

We are delighted to welcome all our children back after the summer holidays. I do hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break.
We extend a particularly warm welcome to the children and parents who are new to Huish. We are pleased that Miss Seward has joined us as the teacher of Class 7 and that Mr Makepeace, Mrs Evans, Mrs Clark and Mrs Reeves have joined our team of class assistants and lunchtime supervisors. We wish them every success and happiness in their new roles.
The school has been a busy place during the holidays. Not only have we had our usual painting and maintenance work, we have redecorated and refurbished the Elliott buildings for this year’s Year 3. We have also re-carpeted Classes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Everywhere looks very spick and span! My particular thanks to Tony Norris and Manor Builders for all their hard work. Also thanks to Mr Makepeace for putting up our new shed to house the Infant play equipment.
This term is, as always, a busy one with plans for a ‘Problem Solving’ Challenge Week during October. We look forward to having a happy and successful year.

Yours sincerely

V E CAMPBELL
Headteacher

Police Clearance - Criminal Records BureauTop of page

You will all have read about the chaos of the police clearance forms and the tremendous backlog that is still there. However, I would emphasise that any parent who wishes to be a voluntary helper, either helping in school, accompanying trips, taking children to sporting events, will need Police Clearance. We still have the forms at school and I do urge you to complete one if you would like to help us. To those of you who have already completed one, a big thank you. The clearance forms are slowly arriving back in school. Please Note the school will be closed on Friday 20 September for a Teachers’ Training Day on Information Technology.

Annual Charity Cake SaleTop of page

Following the House Captains’ Elections on 27 September, the School Houses will be organising this year’s charity fund-raising Cake Sales. The proceeds from the sales this year will be decided by the children, but two possible ideas are The Children’s Hospice or supporting the elderly. We would be most grateful if you can support the children’s efforts by providing a few small cakes for your child (classes 5 to 14 only) to donate to the cake sale on the DAY allocated to his/her House. ALL children in the school will have an opportunity to buy cakes at 20p each on the day of the sales. Please send the money to school on the day of each cake sale in a named envelope to your child’s class teacher.
The day allocated to each House is as follows :-
CAXTON Tuesday 1 October
NEWTON Tuesday 8 October
SHAKESPEARE Tuesday 15 October
SCOTT Tuesday 22 October

Meet the Teacher Evening - Classes 3 - 14 Top of page

On Thursday 19 September we are holding our Parent/Teacher Evening following the same format as last year. The aim of the evening is to run through the curriculum for each class for the Autumn Term and the pattern of lessons and homework throughout the week. There will also be opportunities after the talk by the teachers for you to share any concerns about how your child is settling into their new class. Detailed discussions of your child’s progress will take place in the Spring Term’s parent consultations. The teachers will be in their year group classrooms and will give a short talk to all parents starting at 7.00 pm and another at 7.30 pm We have given two slots for the talk to enable parents to visit other classes if they have more than one child in the school. We will also give out our curriculum sheets at these meetings. If you have more than one child, please remember to collect any additional curriculum sheets from the other classes. As this is mainly an ‘information giving’ evening, we hope to avoid any queues for appointments. Mrs McGrouther (SENCO) will be very pleased to see any parent whose child is on the special needs register and will be available throughout the evening in her room. We will hold our meetings with parents of Reception children in November, when the children have had more time to settle in.

New School WebsiteTop of page

We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new school website. Huge thanks go to Luke Burgess who has spent many an hour constructing the site for us. Without his expertise and endless patience the site would not have been possible. There are still elements of the site that need further development and updating, but this will be completed over the next few months. Watch this space! The site offers parents a range of information including :-
· School Prospectus
· Huish Headlines
· School Events (including holiday dates)
· Activities Gallery
· Vacancies at the School
To ensure safe use of this website can we re-assure parents that photographs of individual children and names of children will not be used. We hope you will find the website useful. Happy surfing! Our address is www.huish.somerset.sch.uk

Off-Site ActivitiesTop of page

During the year your child will probably take part in activities that take place away from school as part of his/her class work. For trips away from our immediate locality that involve the use of transport, we will seek your permission on each occasion. However, there may be times when it is appropriate to take your child out for local trips, eg. a walk to Nine Springs. In these instances it may not be practical to seek written permission and, therefore, I would be grateful if you would kindly complete the slip below and return it to your child’s class teacher confirming your permission to take your child out of school on these occasions.
