Dear Parents
You may recently have seen an advert for a teaching post at Huish.
You will, I know, be sorry to hear that Mr Thomas is leaving us
at the end of this term. He has a new post in Devon and while
we wish him every success and happiness, he will be a real loss
to our staff team. We are aiming to make our new appointment by
the end of May and will let you know who our new teacher will
be as soon as possible.
We have lots of events this term - the PTFA May Fair, Jubilee
Celebrations and Sports Events - further details are included
inside. Thank you as always for your help and support.
Yours sincerely
V E CAMPBELL
Headteacher
PTFA May Fair
Some reminders!
Our Red, White and Blue Day is on Friday 3 May. All donations
for the raffle, tombola, toy, books, bric-a-brac stall very gratefully
received.
Cakes and Plants please to be brought to school on Friday 17 May
or on the morning of the Fair. The school will be open until 5.30
pm on Friday and from 8.30 am on Saturday 18 May.
We are still desperately short of volunteers to help with catering
and stalls. If you can spare half an hour and would like to help,
please contact the school as soon as possible.
Draw tickets are still available from the school office.
House Captains May Fair Raffle
The House Captains are organising a children’s raffle, with all
proceeds going to the PTFA. The tickets will be 20p each and on
sale in the infant and junior playgrounds during break times from
Tuesday 6 May. The draw will take place on Monday 20 May and there
will be prizes for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Drinking Water at School
There has been a lot of research that indicates that children
really need to keep their fluid intake high. Not only does it
keep them healthy, it also helps with their learning! Therefore,
from Tuesday 7 May children may bring to school a bottle of drinking
water. These will be stored in a plastic box in the classroom
(not kept in their school bags.) The bottles must be named and
it would be useful if they have the drinking tops which re-seal.
Jubilee Events
On Friday 31 May our kitchen will be preparing a special Jubilee
Lunch for our school dinner children (see menu below.) In the
afternoon we will be holding a School Jubilee Tea Party (more
details will be sent out nearer the time.)
Roast Lamb & Mint Sauce
Roast Potatoes, Baton Carrots, Broccoli & Gravy
or Vegetarian Alternative
Bulgar Wheat and Cheese Patties
Queen of Puddings with Ice Cream or Topping
or Fresh Fruit or Yoghurt
Later in the term, we will also be holding a celebration Summer
Barbeque for all the children.
Marks and Spencer - Rainbow of Hope
At Marks and Spencer stores, as part of the Jubilee Celebrations,
they are aiming to raise £1 million to support children
with speech and language difficulties. We enclose a letter from
their Co-ordinator to outline their plans. We do hope some of
our Huish children will contribute their hopes pictures and poems
to this very worthwhile cause.
Bank Holiday
May we remind parents that the school will be closed on Monday
6 May for the May Day Bank Holiday.
Start of the Day
There are still a number of children arriving at school as early
as
8.05 am! Can you please refrain from bringing or sending your
child to school before 8.40 am, at which time they are supervised
and safe.
Conversely there are children who are still persistently late
arriving at school. This is disruptive for the office staff and
teaching staff alike. To ensure a smooth start to the day all
children need to be in school by 8.50 am .
SAT’s Week
The Standard Assessment Tests for Key Stage 2 children will take
place in the week beginning Monday 13 May. Year 6 will be sitting
the National Tests and Years 3, 4 and 5 will be using the ‘Optional’
SAT’s materials. We would be grateful if your child has a good
night’s sleep during this week so they are refreshed to do their
best. Can you also make sure they are in school by 8.50 am so
that we can make a prompt start each day. Year 2 will be carrying
out the tests and tasks throughout the month of May.
Tesco Vouchers
As you know, Tesco are no longer issuing Computers for Schools
vouchers. If you have any still lurking in bags or drawers, please
send them in as we are currently counting them in readiness for
posting off. Thank you for once again supporting our school with
this promotion.
Learning Journey
Enclosed with this Huish Headlines is a book entitled ‘Learning
Journey’. This free guide gives you information on all areas of
the curriculum. Each subject of the National Curriculum is explained,
how it might be taught, expectations for an ‘average’ child and
learning ideas you could utilise at home. We hope you find it
useful.
Charging Policy
The Governors have recently reviewed our policy for the charging
of educational visits, swimming and residential visits. They would
like to remind parents that although the school does subsidise
these activities and contributions are voluntary, if insufficient
parents contribute, the activity may have to be cancelled. Thank
you for your support with this.

Break Time Snacks Questionnaire
The Huish School Council are currently involved on a project
concerning the possible introduction of break time snacks. This
is part of our Health Education work, following the scheme ‘Child
to Child’ in order to re-qualify for our Healthy Schools Award.
Please could you spend a few moments filling in this questionnaire
so that we can see what parental opinion is on this subject and
return the completed slip to your child’s class teacher by Monday
13 May.
