I would like to take this opportunity to say hello.
I am delighted to have been appointed as Fairmead’s Headteacher,
and was pleased to meet so many of you at the Induction Evening.
As always, you are very welcome to visit school, and I will continue
to operate an ‘open door’ policy.

Please could parents bringing their children to school, not bring
them before 8:45am. We have been in discussions with the LEA Schools
transport concerning the school buses arriving too early in school,
causing supervision difficulties on the playground. Hopefully the
buses will delay their arrivals until 8:45am.
We would like to reinstate coffee mornings. This would be an opportunity
for parents to get together. Any preferred day of the week - ring
the school office to let them know.
Apollo was originally founded to help children who needed exercise
after orthopaedic operations or after periods of immobilisation
in splints. Our membership has now widened so that we have more
adults than children, with many different kinds of physical handicap.
Some join on a temporary basis after an accident, then after they
have recovered become Associate Members so that they can come along
and help other people in the Club.
We swim at Goldenstones on Saturday mornings 9am to 10am and at
Sherborne Boys School on Tuesday evenings 7pm to 8pm. Charges are
50p for children for each swimming session. Anyone who needs help
and has a family member or friend who wishes to help them can become
an Associate member, the annual fee is £5.
We have a mini bus for those members who have difficulty getting
about.
Members who wish to, have the opportunity to take part in galas
all over the West Country. Apollo own a sailing boat and some canoes.
Sailing takes place at Sutton Bingham Reservoir on Thursdays in
the early evening during the summer months.
Our Secretary is Sarah Hull - 01935 424674 and she will always be
pleased to help with further information.
Somerset County Council have produced a video dealing with speed
restrictions throughout the county, including 20mph zones outside
all schools.
We have shown the video to all Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils and all
pupils have been given a leaflet.
The video is available to parents and if you would like to borrow
it please get in touch with the school office.
Every box top is worth 10p. Please send in your tops so that we
can raise as much money as possible for the school.
It would be a great help if friends and relatives could also collect
them.
Wednesday 25 September
We all had great fun swimming at Bath. The school of the gala was
Culverhayes School. I was in one race and that was the back stroke.
Mrs Cook asked me to look after the little ones. We had our dinner
by the canal and said thank you to Mr Carter. At the end of the
day we just had ten minutes before the bus lines. We all had a great
day in Bath with the staff. (Class 4.2)
Thursday 12 October 2002 Living Shoes
These are the shoes I wear
when I’m doing the garden.
They are red because
the dog sleeps in them.
These are the shoes
I wear on my skateboard.
These are the shoes
I watch TV in.
These are the shoes
I play football in,
they broke in a day.
These are the shoes
I kick people with.
They are naughty because
they are the shoes
which look at people
when they are walking.
They also go in my coat pocket. (4.2)
A War Broke Out
It was a Sunday freezing morning
I had to go to war
I didn’t want to but my wife kicked
me out the door.
There was a crowd out my door
I told them to clear off but they
wouldn’t .
It was a cold night the air
and rain was cold as ice in warfare.
Next morning my life was at risk.
as I took my life in it’s own hands
I was scared I must tell.
Bit I missed my wife and even my
life. (4.1)
The Noise Poem
The wind is blowing
The birds are singing
The sea is rough
The people are playing.
The cows are mooing
The countryside is beautiful
The farmer is feeding.
The children are shouting
The bossing of the parents
The noise of traffic
And the sun is still shining! (4.2)
My Pony
My pony her name is Harry.
Harry is a good pony,
Harry is just the best,
Harry is a fun pony to ride.
I love her to bits.
I would never sell her
she means so much to me.
I love her a lot
I think the world of her
She is so cool and she has a
good temperament
She is the best pony.
I have always loved her.
You are a good pony
I will always love you
A good girl and the best pony. (4.1)
Dolphins
As the dolphins soared through
the waves clicking and whistling,
they splashed and crashed in
play.
I like the singing the dolphins
make,
it sounds so beautiful as I wake.
I like the moon it shines so
bright it is,
oh so stunning late at night.
I like the stars that shine on
me,
it’s really amazing when the
dolphins sing to me. (4.2)

P1 News
The children came back refreshed after
the Summer holidays and seem happy to be in school again.
The theme for the first half of the Autumn term in P1 is colour.
We have already been busy mixing colours, changing colours and looking
at the colour spectrum in science.
As part of our Science and Geography curriculum, we are going to
visit Stourhead to look at the Autumn colour and make a map of the
lake. We will hopefully bring them all back again! Watch this space!
P2 News
P2 welcomed J* and O* to the class this year and started on our
playground project by visiting local parks. Walking there and back
was quite an adventure and a good opportunity to practise being
safe when walking, playing and crossing the road. Everybody was
surprised how many different signs we saw, some needed more puzzling
out than others.
We are enjoying our Oxford Reading Tree work, sharing stories,
writing our own and using our new classroom PC to help us. We have
learnt to weave using lovely bright colours, it is tricky to keep
‘under, over, under, over’ but it looks good when we do it right
so we keep trying hard.
P2 are proud of Mrs Brookham for learning all our names in two
days and enjoyed it when she came and did PE with us. We also had
a good time on Induction Evening because our classroom was full
of so many of our families.
P3 News
This term we have started our History and Geography project on
Sherborne. The first time we visited we drove around in the new
mini bus looking at all the shops and special places. Then we got
out and looked at Cheap Street and the Museum. Last week we went
to the old Castle and found out about what life was like in the
11th Century. Next week we are going to visit the Abbey to see what
we can find out.
Also at the beginning of term we did lots of lovely work about
our holidays and we displayed it in Yeovil Library. We had a lovely
time in Bristol listening to the orchestra play music. We ended
up having our lunch on the Downs which we enjoyed too! Some of our
class went to the swimming gala in Bath and had a great time and
swam well.
3.1 News
The children have spent the last month settling in to life in the
Secondary Department, looking back longingly at the safe haven of
Primary but getting into gear for the new challenges ahead. They
have had a lot to take in; a new classroom, adjusted timetable,
different teachers for a lot of subjects but they have coped very
well, especially with being tested during the first week back!
Here is what they have enjoyed most:
”I like D&T because we are drawing on wood to make a key holder”.
”I like Art because I am good at it”.
”I like French, its new; and Maths because I like the teacher”.
”I like cooking because we get to eat what we cook, like crumpets—Yum!”
”I like doing fun things on the computer in IT”.
”I have enjoyed everything, especially getting good marks in the
tests”.
The class looks forward to D* and T* returning soon. D* has been
in hospital after a recent diagnosis of diabetes and T* fell off
his bike, damaging his shoulder.
3.2 News
E*, C* and A* represented Fairmead at a swimming gals in Bath and
had a fabulous time.
H* is really enjoying Mrs Brookham’s assemblies especially the
new songs.
On 15 October 3.1 and 3.2 take part in the Somerset Music Virtual
Show where hundreds of young people from all over Somerset will
participate in workshops on singing, Rock/Pop technology and Samba
percussion—we can’t wait!
3.3 News
The class have settled into the new term very well and are enjoying
being ‘proper’ seniors (quote).
We have some enjoyable activities planned for this term especially
in the lead up to Christmas.
4.1 News
The students of 4.1 have made an excellent start to their leavers’
course. They have enjoyed their new courses and I have been really
impressed with the way that they have coped with these changes.
They have started the college link at Yeovil College and we have
been very excited about starting our own Young Enterprise company.
S*, K* and L* have gained their Special Badge awards and I am expecting
more to follow soon!

For my Work Experience…….
"I go to Compton View Residential Home. I like it there because
the people are very nice and friendly. I would like to work there
all the time."
"I work in P1 with Mrs Sanders and Mrs Payne. On my first
day I was nervous and a bit scared but I really enjoyed it and look
forward to going there now. The children are really sweet although
they can be a bit cheeky sometimes, especially Bethany and Luke,
but they are lovely and make me smile."
"I go the Ham Hill Quarries because I am interested in building.
No two days are alike, we can spend all day moving masses amounts
of stone, ready to be transported around the country or another
day we have to grade the stone for size and quality. It’s interesting,
I’m learning a lot and it is great fun being one of the lads at
work. However, Miss Harris is threatening to get plastic seat covers
for her car!"
"I am working at Somerfields in Yeovil. The thing I have enjoyed
most is working in the loading bay. The things I have been doing
in the loading bay is loading the food on to the trolleys and putting
the food upstairs and the cardboard boxes in the machine."
"I work at Focus. They sell all DIY tools and things to make.
The staff are helpful. It’s a nice place to work. There is Craft
World, Garden Centre, a painting and decorating area at Focus."
